Whether you are a new or returning student, moving in can be both fun and exhausting. We’ve worked with our students and staff to make the process more efficient. We offer suggestions on what to bring and what to leave at home, preparations you might need to make, move-in times, dining hours, helpful tips for moving in and more.

Fall Semester Move-In Schedule
- NEW STUDENTS: The Wednesday before classes begin.
- RETURNING STUDENTS: The Friday - Sunday before classes begin.

- Due to summer transitions, training of student staff, and maintenance projects, we are unable to allow students to return earlier than the posted opening date and time.
- If you are part of Dawg Days, SIU Athletics, or Marching Salukis you will receive direct communication from the organizers of those activities regarding your arrival date.
If you can’t move in on your designated day, you may do so on the following day. Go directly to your assigned residence hall beginning at 9 a.m. to check in. Siblings may move in on the same day.
If you will move in later than 5:00 P.M. or will arrive after Sunday, contact your Area Office: East Campus 618-453-3889, West Campus 618-453-2471.
New Student Move-In Information
Students with last names beginning with A-M 8:00 A.M. - 11:30 A.M.
Students with last names beginning with N-Z 1:00 P.M. - 4:30 P.M.
EAST CAMPUS: MAE SMITH, Neely & SCHNEIDER HALL
Park and unload your vehicle where directed. Leave someone with your belongings and move your vehicle to Lot 45 (in Rinella Field). With your student picture ID in hand, proceed to the check-in area in your residence hall to complete the check-in process and receive your key/fob. Proceed to the elevator and load your belongings. Lower floors may use stairways. NOTE: Rolling carts are available to help expedite move-in.
WEST CAMPUS: THOMPSON POINT
Go to your building and unload curbside. Leave someone with your belongings and move your car to Lot 4 (Communications Building corner lot), across from Thompson Point, or in overnight lots: Lot 23 (behind the Communications Building) or Lot 59 (past Greek Row). With your student picture ID in hand, go to Lentz Hall to complete your check-in process and receive your key/fob. There will be signs posted to direct you to the correct location.
RETURNING STUDENTS' MOVE-IN INFO
Friday, August 16 - Sunday, August 18, 8:00 A.M. - 4:30 P.M. With your student ID in hand, check in at your assigned hall.
Note: Anyone checking in after the assigned times will need to call the Residence Life duty phone at 618-453-3889.
Spring Semester Move In Schedule
Spring move-in is on the Saturday before classes begin. Move-in is from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
RETURNING STUDENTS: If you are a returning student, who is coming back after Winter Break, follow the information on the winter break page.
NEW STUDENTS: New Students attending the New Student Orientation on Friday will be permitted to move in 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. prior to the scheduled orientation.
If you are new to SIU for this semester, follow the move-in instructions below.
To move-in, pull your vehicle near your building and unload your belongings curb side. Leave someone with your belongings while you move your vehicle to a parking lot. For East Campus, park in Lot 45 (in Rinella Field) or 106 (on Wall Street). For West Campus, park in Lot 4 (Communications Building corner lot). Your vehicle must be moved immediately after being unloaded. Unattended vehicles may be towed at the owner's expense.
Once your vehicle is parked, take your student ID and check-in with the area office on West Campus or your building lobby on East Campus to get your key. Once you have your key, you may move your belongings from the unloading area to your room.
A limited number of lofts and handcarts are available for check out at the following times and locations. If there is a long line for lofting items, you may come back later. If you own a handcart, we recommend you clearly label it with your name and bring it with you. A photo ID is required to check out a loft or handcart.

For rooms with beds already lofted, lofts may not be removed from room. If you wish to unloft your bed, you may store the lofting legs under the bed.

Special dining hours are available during move in. During spring semester, the dining halls open with normal hours of operation on the Saturday prior to move-in. The dining halls offer regular hours of operation and full service at all meals during fall semester move in. Hours and services are subject to change.
