CULINARY & NUTRITION SERVICES JOBS

Food Service Assistant positions are available through Culinary & Nutrition Services (CNS). Available positions include servers, dishwashers, food preparation workers, or a combination of these duties. Food Service Assistants are also responsible for delivering quality customer service within our dining facilities. Hours range from shifts starting at 6 AM and ending at 9 PM, 7 days per week. All student employees will work every other weekend. You must be registered as a full-time student, during your semester of employment, to qualify. A copy of your class schedule (for the semester that you are applying for) must accompany your application. Once selected for this position, all students must complete a food handler training course before completing the hiring paperwork.

COMMUNITY ASSISTANT & RESIDENT ASSISTANTS

As a resident within University Housing, you may only see a certain part of the work our student staff does on a weekly basis. We want you to connect you with other staff members who can better explain the quality and quantity of work that being a member of our student staff entails. During this Information Session, we also want to share with you the timeline for the Interview Process.

DESK ASSISTANTS

Duties of the Desk Assistant (DA) include, but are not limited to receptionist responsibilities, upholding policies, and maintaining an appropriate atmosphere in the lobby area. Please note that, regardless of where desk assistants live, they may be placed at any of the desks in any of our residence hall areas or at "Wall & Grand" Apartments.

To be eligible, applicants must:

• Live on campus for the entire period of employment. Note: Off Campus, Applicants may be considered for Break Desk jobs (i.e. Thanksgiving, Winter Break, Spring Break, and Summer Break).
• Be a full-time student in an undergraduate or graduate degree program at SIU.
• Be in good academic standing, with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 and a semester GPA of 2.3 at the time of application and during employment. If in a graduate degree program, the DA must be in good academic standing with their individual colleges.
• Be in good disciplinary standing.

Evergreen Terrace Desk Assistant (ET DA) include, but is not limited to receptionist responsibilities, upholding policies, and maintaining an appropriate atmosphere in the area office.  Applicants may be considered to work breaks (i.e. Thanksgiving, Winter Break, Spring Break, and Summer Break).

To be eligible, applicants must:

• Be a full-time student in an undergraduate or graduate degree program at SIU.
• Be in good academic standing, with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 and a semester GPA of 2.3 at the time of application and during employment. If in a graduate degree program, the ET DA must be in good academic standing with their individual colleges.

The Evergreen Terrace Desk Assistant Application is for desk assistants to work in the Evergreen Terrace Area Office (1902 Evergreen Terrace Drive). The office is open from 8 am to 4:30 pm Monday through Friday.

HOUSEKEEPING AND MAINTENANCE JOBS

Housekeeping and maintenance job duties are listed below.

• Janitorial duties include sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, and waxing.
• Cleaning sinks, toilets, and showers.
• Cleaning windows and trash cans.
• Washing, cleaning, and moving furniture in excess of 40 pounds.
• Other duties as assigned.
• Driver's license preferred.

TOUR GUIDE JOBS

Our tour guides provide tours for prospective students and their families. They are hired to work out of the University Housing Marketing Office and may also provide clerical support. Preference may be given to students who have availability at least one day a week, Monday - Friday, 9:45 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. or 2:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m., however; all interested students are encouraged to apply.

Hall Director Position

The Hall Director (HD) position at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIU-C) is a 12-month, live-in appointment. Hall Directors are responsible for creating an inclusive living environment which fosters personal growth and academic success for students living on campus. The Hall Director role is responsible for the development and implementation of strong community building initiatives through the use of educational programming. The Hall Director position requires flexibility, a positive attitude and the desire to create opportunities for social and educational development.

Hall Directors will serve in an on-call, weeklong (seven day) duty rotation involving emergency response and crisis intervention. Hall Directors are responsible for the supervision and training of student staff while promoting personal and professional development through appropriate role modeling. The Hall Director role is divided into four main areas of responsibility supervision and staff development, community development, administration, and building management.

Position Responsibilities

Supervision and Staff Development

• Select, train, supervise, and evaluate Resident Assistant and/or Community Assistant student staff members.
• Hold individual weekly/bi-weekly meetings with Resident Assistant/Community Assistant staff to discuss personal, community, and professional issues/concerns, as well as monitoring student wellbeing and development.
• Lead weekly staff meetings to discuss community and departmental issues and concerns.
• Support and attend events/activities planned by student-led, departmental, or campus organizations.
• Establish, advise, and manage Area Council Executive Board for your area of responsibility.
• Advise and manage on-campus student leadership organizations such as National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH), Residence Hall Association (RHA) and the Black Togetherness Organization (BTO).
• Attend weekly Area Council meetings and leadership organizations executive board meetings.

Community Development

• Work with student staff to develop and promote House (floor) based communities.
• Collaborate with students to create House (floor) based community identities.
• Establish and recruit student leaders to serve on area-specific leadership council (Area Council).
• Plan and implement monthly, HD-led, area programming relating to the Residence Education residential curriculum.
• Promote and assist with the recruitment for student leadership organizations such as Area Council, RHA, NRHH, and BTO.
• Collaborate with Faculty University Associates (FUAs) and Department of Residence Education to promote and execute Living-Learning Community (LLC) events and programs.

Administration

• Adjudicate student conduct/administrative conferences with students using both conduct and report management systems (Advocate).
• Utilize housing administrative software for on campus occupancy management, room changes, and damage charges (StarRez).
• Manage operating budgets for Resident Assistant (RA) and/or Community Assistant (CA), student leadership organization, and Area Council programming.
• Establish both working relationships and lines of communication with campus partners such as Counseling and Psychological Services.
• Chair/serve on departmental review/planning committees such as: Training/Recruitment, Policies & Procedures, or Social Justice & Inclusion.

Building Management

• Maintain a secure and functional physical environment conducive to student learning and success.
• Conduct frequent walkthroughs of area of responsibility.
  Establish working relationship with facilities and housekeeping/custodial staff.
• Report building/facility related emergencies/after-hour concerns and submit maintenance reports/requests.
• Utilize building access and camera systems to ensure the security of on-campus living facilities.
• Assist with implementation of summer camps/conferences held within the residence halls.
