Future Leaders of Student Affairs

Future Leaders in Student Affairs (FLSA) is an opportunity for student leaders to learn more about academic and career opportunities in higher education and student affairs.

FLSA will hold regular events designed to increase students’ awareness about graduate programs, assistantships, functional areas across campus, and personal and professional development opportunities. FLSA will work to create a collaborative network across campus, connecting interested students with mentors, experiences, and internships. In addition to programs and connections, FLSA provides support for students who are in all phases of the graduate school or job search process.

SIU Professional Staff are invited to attend FLSA Meetings on the second and fourth Thursday of each month in the Trueblood Conference Room from 9:00am-10:00am.

Students are encouraged to come to events with questions and discussion topics prepared. We will utilize our time together to best prepare our students for a bright future in the field.

October “Careers Student Affairs Month”

October will be dedicated to recruiting professional staff interested in being mentors for undergraduate and graduate students interested in pursuing a career in student affairs. FLSA hopes to gain committee members interested in helping plan developmental and social events throughout the year. The committee will begin to recruit undergraduate and graduate students interested in student affairs.

In conjunction with “Careers in Student Affairs Month,” FLSA will be hosting a Professional Staff Mentorship Information Social on Wednesday, October 7th at 10am in SSB 150/160. This will serve as a platform for recruiting professional staff to join the committee and volunteer to mentor a student.

Mentor and Mentee applications are available now. Applications are due no later than noon on Wednesday, October 21st. FLSA will host an unveiling of the mentorship pairs on Friday, October 30th at 10:00am in SSB 150/160.

November “Summer Internship Month”

FLSA will focus on preparing our graduate students for summer internship opportunities with ACUHO-I, NODA, NACA and others. The committee will introduce the process, provide resources and examples to those interested in pursuing a summer internship. We will provide resume and cover letter review and recommendations, provide mock phone interview sessions and provide support to those searching for positions.

December “Mentorship Month”

A mentorship social will be held in December to provide an opportunity for mentors and mentees to touch base during the final weeks of the semester. It is our hope that by December, the mentorship pairs and met multiple times and have begun forging a lasting relationship.

Internship deadlines will also be reiterated as the students will be away on winter break when the majority of the ACUHO-I, NODA, and NACA deadlines pass.

January “Application Month”

In January we will focus on helping undergraduate students prepare for the Oshkosh Placement Exchange and/or regional Graduate School recruitment weekends. We will assist second year graduate students register and prepare Placement Exchanges. Students will have the opportunity to have their resumes reviewed and to participate in mock interviews with SIU staff.

February “Future Preparation Month”

Mock interviews will continue as searching students prepare for Placement Exchanges. The committee will also host a Placement Exchanges etiquette session to prepare students for a variety of situations they may encounter at a Placement Exchange.

March “Conference and Recruitment Month”

FLSA will host a final conference etiquette session to prepare students to attend the National Conferences. Discussion will be held on what to do before, during and after Placement Exchanges, including phone, skype and on-campus interviews, position offers as well as what happens if a school is not interested in candidacy. Students and staff are encouraged to share stories both positive and constructive, come with discussion topics and questions to help better support the group and prepare each individual for their own search.

April “What’s Next Month”

FLSA will focus on “What’s Next?” From undergraduate graduation to graduate students beginning their first professional career, we’re here to support every step of the process. We’ll look to members returning in the fall to begin planning fall recruitment as well as develop promotional materials prior to leaving for the summer.

May “Oh The Places You’ll Go Month”

We will end the academic year by celebrating the successes of our students who have found their next step in the field and recognizing mentorship pairs. May will also be dedicated to assessing where we’ve been and where we’re headed.
